Today I taught a painting class in the old fish house on Lake Superior that is the former studio of Birney Quick. There were five of us painting the views from the windows. We had a great time, and a fantastic lunch.

I absolutely love this… looks both stark and inviting. Is that weird?
Stark and inviting. Interesting combination of words. Not weird at all. This is the northland. It is stark and rugged, mysteriously and beautifully inviting. C.S. Lewis’ idea of ‘northernness’ comes to mind. That longing so intense… you get a glimmer of it and then it is gone before you can fully even sense it. The indescribable longing that can’t be fulfilled in this world, which he interpreted to mean he was made for another.
